Burlexe is a pioneering brand inspired by burlesque stars, vintage icons and showgirls – and occasionally showboys!

We exist online and in the real world with our unique shows and empowering experiences and we’ve been around since 2010….

The Herstory of Burlesque

Burlexe is a unique on and offline experience about the lives of the women who created burlesque; both contemporary performers and the legends that paved the way.

It’s a theatrical experience, not a typical burlesque show. Conceived, created, written and produced by Howard Wilmot, Burlexe began in 2011 with a series of shows mixing stories, song and burlesque performance. At the heart of what we do are the fascinating stories of fascinating women.

Since 2011, Burlexe has spun off into Boylexe and a combined male-female experience called This Is Burlexe.

Boylesque show Boylexe is a spin-off from the critically acclaimed burlesque show Burlexe.

The second in artistic director Howard Wilmot’s cabaret trilogy, the show takes a similar theatrical format, mixing storytelling, song and male striptease or ‘boylesque’ with a pinch of drag.

Our shows star the very best of the UK cabaret and boylesque scene specially handpicked for their roles in the show and are available in various formats.

Boylesque show Boylexe moved to a new venue, Cecil’s in London Bridge in 2015 though its next incarnation is in association with Burlexe for This Is Burlexe.

Howard Wilmot

Howard Wilmot

Artistic Director

Artistic Director Howard Wilmot heads up the Burlexe team; his background is in communications, particularly digital.

One of the first journalists to move online in 1999, he subsequently worked on the digital campaigns for lead players in the music business, for various brands and media – check LinkedIn for the deets if that’s of interest.

A creative strategist and content expert, he’s always wanted to create entertainment formats that straddle the real world and digital. He created Burlexe as a means of self-expression after seeing a (particularly uninspired) show in Vegas. When he got fucked off with knocking on a whole lot of doors with his idea, he decided to do it himself.

Boylexe Burlesque Costumes

By | The Boylexe Boylesque Show

On 4th July 2014, male striptease show Boylexe returns to the newly refurbished Shadow Lounge, so we thought it was only right that we should have a refurbishment of our burlesque costumes to match.

We have already upgraded our branding and imagery, working with Daniel Crute, aka, The Mighty Moustache/Sir Aleksander Leopold. Now collaborating with up and coming costumier Rachel Good, we’ve taken the original male striptease show Boylexe look and feel and upgraded it to match the brand and our new venue.

What is Burlexe?

By | Burlexe

“Burlesque saved me. It’s true.

“I am Howard, Burlexe’s Creator and Artistic Director. And Burlexe happened at a time of utmost difficulty for me; I was totally bogged down by recession and business worries whilst gradually realizing that I’d walked along a career path that made sense to everyone else but not really to me. Something had to give (if it wasn’t me).

“So what is Burlexe…? Well, originally, I had an idea about showgirls which mutated into an idea about burlesque which I then tried to rally support for in the media world – only to be met with a series of no’s or impossible goals. After one such meeting, I remember thinking, ‘How can I do this myself?!’
